Professional Review

Bendy and the Ink Machine is a horror game with puzzles or an action game with horror elements or a puzzle game where you have to survive the cartoon horror. It was launched in April 2017 and quickly gained popularity and a solid fanbase thanks to its rubber hose animation style and the ability to scare even the courageous. Available for download on PC, Mac, console and mobile versions.

Graphics 5/5

The style is what the game is about, so graphics are the essential element here. The designers at the Meatly created an ominous atmosphere by adding key horror elements to the cartoon stylistics of the 1920s. They’ve managed to create a nuanced world of the animation studio reminding of Disney early years. The graphics have a hand-drawn quality to them and are keeping your attention, and every new level makes you admire them more.

Gameplay 4/5

Bendy is the name of a cartoon character of the Golden Age of animation which now resides in an abandoned studio full of dark secrets. You play as a guest to the studio and its soon-to-be prisoner Henry Stein and will have to face puzzles and monsters to get to the bottom of the horrible story that happened to its personnel.

The game was released part by part, and that makes sense: the first chapters are very slow and quiet, so you get the sense of horror from just moving around. At these stages, you only get to solve some puzzles and find ways to the hidden parts of the studio. Soon, however, the pace of the game fastens as you face the cartoon monsters and collect weapons.

Running and hiding is what you do for the most part, as most monsters are quite easy to fight and some of them are just invincible. But it’s not a shooter game in any way. It has some varied puzzles, and you will enjoy putting the pieces of the story together. Though not for long. It takes four hours average to complete the game.

Controls 3.5/5

Initially released for PC, Bendy and the Ink Machine has a solid set of a puzzle game controls, but some reviewers are disappointed with its PS4 version. Joystick messes up a simple set of moves and fighting, or even puzzle solving can become a drag. The mobile version is still enjoyable thanks to the simplicity of the original. The menu is easy to reach and user-friendly, but you won’t need it so much, because there’s an autosave on every level.

Replay Value 3/5

Bendy and the Ink Machine is a fascinating story that goes with a beautiful game, but replay doesn’t seem like a major option here: all the puzzles are sold, and all the secrets came to light. There’s a nice set of collectibles in the game, so you probably would like to return to some levels to find something you’ve missed before. Another reason to start again is to immerse into the authentic atmosphere of the game or to show it to someone who would love it too.

In the age of larger-than-life graphics, the decision to make a first-person horror game look like an old Disney cartoon seems fresh and smart. With its evolving storyline and various puzzles, Bendy and the Ink Machine can be crowned a cartoon horror of the decade. It’s accessible for newbies but requires your attention, logic and the love of being frightened. It is recommended for computers and mobile devices or consoles with a computer mouse.

Downloading Bendy and the Ink Machine is a must for the fans of a horror genre, puzzle solvers and old cartoons enthusiasts. Everyone else will enjoy it too.
